JDI overtakes LG in display orders for iPhone 6s, says report
Japan Display (JDI) currently holds a 50% share for iPhone 6s panel shipments, surpassing LG Display’s 48% share and Sharp at 2%, according to a report from Korea-based ET News.
The report speculated that the move comes as Apple aims to shift its reliance on Korea-based panel makers to other players in the industry. LG’s shipment share to Apple for its iPhone series has fluctuated over the years but for the most part the company has remained Apple’s top iPhone display supplier. Since the beginning of 2015, LG’s market share has begun to drop, with JDI taking the number one position.
JDI is expected to remain the main iPhone display supplier throughout the end of the year and is likely to further dominate shipments into 2016. Apple was reported to have invested in JDI at the beginning of 2015 for 6G LTPS facilities that are expected to go into mass production in mid-2016, which could further LG’s share, the report added.
Apple has also been in discussions with Taiwan makers over LTPS display supply due to their ability to offer low quotes, but capacity concerns are still an issue, the report noted. Supply chains estimate 88-92 million iPhone 6s devices will be shipped by the end of 2015, the report said. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20150914PD203.html?mod=0
